Geo-blocking
A site decides what to show you before you have typed anything. It reads the address your request arrived from, maps it to a country, and serves the version licensed there.
Every request carries an IP address, and every IP belongs to a range registered to a country. That lookup takes a site under a millisecond, and it happens before the page is built. There is no cookie to clear and no setting to change: the decision was made on the way in.
What sits behind that decision is almost always a contract. Broadcast rights, distribution deals and price agreements are signed country by country, and the block is how those contracts are enforced. Which is why the same subscription shows a different catalogue in two countries — you are not being punished, you are being routed to the version someone bought the right to show you.
Streaming is the obvious case, and the reason most people meet geo-blocking. It is far from the only one.

Redirects only the domain lookups a service uses to place you. Fast, because your traffic is not tunnelled — and that is also the limit: nothing is encrypted, your real IP is still visible, and services that check the IP rather than the DNS see straight through it.
A stranger relaying your traffic in exchange for nothing. Many inject ads, log requests, or break HTTPS to read them. If the service is free and has no other product, the traffic is the product.
Excellent for anonymity, poor for this. You cannot choose the exit country reliably, throughput is low, and most large platforms block known exit nodes on sight. Use it for what it is for.
The whole connection leaves from a server in the country you chose, encrypted end to end. The site reads that address, finds a local visitor, and serves the local version. It is the only one of the four that changes both what the site sees and who can watch you along the way.
Using a VPN is legal in most countries, and changing your apparent location is not a crime in itself. What it can do is break a service's terms of use, and the consequence there is contractual — a warning, or an account closed. That is between you and the service. Check the rules where you are, since a handful of countries do restrict VPNs.
No, and anyone promising otherwise is guessing. Large platforms keep lists of datacentre address ranges and refuse them regardless of country. When that happens, another location in the list usually clears it. Tell us which service and we will look at the range.
