The free tier is not a crippled version of the paid one. It is the same software, the same encryption, the same kill switch, on four servers instead of thirty-five. Nothing is switched off to make you upgrade — the difference is how many people share the machine you land on.
Which means the honest question is not free or paid, it is how you use it. Someone who turns a VPN on for twenty minutes a week and someone who leaves it on all day are not buying the same thing.

Nothing here is throttled on purpose. What the free tier can be is busy — four servers carry everyone, so at peak times a Premium location is simply less crowded.

Questions about the free tier
Is it free forever, or a trial?
Free, with no end date. There is no trial period to expire and no card on file to start charging. If that changes we would have to say so on this page first.
What is the catch?
Four countries instead of thirty-five, and the four are shared by everyone on the free tier, so peak hours are slower. That is the whole of it — no data cap, no session limit, no ads.
Do I need to create an account?
Not for the browser extension: install it, pick a country, done. An account is only needed for Premium, so the subscription can follow you between devices.
How slow is the free tier, really?
Fine for browsing and normal video most of the time; noticeably slower in the evening, when everyone is on the same four servers. Nothing is capped artificially — it is contention, not a limit.
If I upgrade, do I lose anything?
No. Premium is the same product with more locations, more room per server and the rest of the suite. Cancel and you fall back to the free tier rather than to nothing.
